Many parents ask me the same question: If my child gets speech therapy at school, why would we consider private therapy too?

The truth is — both are valuable, and they serve different purposes.

School-based speech therapy is designed to help a child access their education. Goals are tied to classroom success and are determined by educational impact. Therapy often happens in small groups and focuses on the skills needed for learning at school.

Private speech therapy looks at the whole child — not just the school day. It allows us to support communication in everyday life: at home, on the playground, during family routines, and in relationships. Sessions are often more individualized and include coaching for parents so strategies carry over beyond therapy time.

One isn’t better than the other. They simply have different lenses. School therapy supports learning in the classroom, while private therapy supports communication across life. For many children, the two together create the strongest foundation.

At the heart of both is the same goal: helping children feel understood, connected, and confident in their communication.
