In my twenty years as a speech-language pathologist, I’ve learned a simple truth: connection always comes before compliance.

We often measure progress by how well a child follows directions, says the “right” words, or completes a task. But meaningful communication isn’t about checking boxes — it’s about being seen, heard, and understood.

When we prioritize connection first, everything else falls into place more naturally. A child who feels safe is more willing to try, experiment, and take risks. A child who feels understood will engage in ways that are far more authentic than any “correct” answer could create.

This approach isn’t always the fastest path on paper, but it is the most rewarding. It transforms therapy from a series of tasks into a relationship-based journey, where progress is measured not just in speech, but in confidence, trust, and joy.

For me, choosing connection over compliance isn’t just a strategy — it’s a commitment. It’s how I show up for every child and every family, every single day.
